There one day the lord of a herd of elephants, who lived in the woods of that mountain, was roaming with his cows, breaking down the great trees and the wide thickets thorny with reed and bamboo and cane. At the mere smell of him lions and lordly elephants, tigers and the other beasts of prey, rhinoceroses and even great serpents run away in fear, and the sarabhas and the yaks, the white and the black. Wolves and boars, buffaloes, bears and porcupines, ox-tailed monkeys, jackals and apes; while elsewhere the small deer and hares and the rest go about unafraid, because he lets them be. Burnt by the heat, ringed by his bulls and his cows, followed by the young ones dripping with rut, shaking the whole mountain with his weight, waited on by swarms of bees that feed on rut,

he smelt from far off the wind from the lake, dusted with lotus pollen; his eyes swimming with rut, with his herd around him worn out by thirst, he came down quickly to the edge of that lake.
