Seeing that trouble of theirs, hard pressed with pity, the god who is friend to all beings said this to Sati, his dear one. Ah, Bhavani, look at this ruin of the creatures, come upon them out of the Kalakuta that has risen from the churning of the ocean of milk. Safety must be made by me for these, who want to keep their breath. That is the whole use of a lord: that he protect the wretched. Good men guard living beings with their own breath, which can break in a moment, when beings are bound in enmity and bewildered by the maya of the self. When a man shows pity, good woman, Hari, the self of all, is pleased; and when Hari the Bhagavan is pleased, I am pleased, and all that moves and does not move. So I will eat this poison. Let there be well-being for the creatures.
