35So in that fight the antigods and the lords of the gods, closing pair with pair and fighting, came at one another and struck with all their strength, each wanting to win, with sharp arrows and swords and lances. 36With clubs, with discus and mace and spear and halberd, with javelins and firebrands, with darts and axes too, with swords and broad-headed shafts, with iron bars and hammers and slings, they cut off one another's heads. 37Elephants, horses, chariots, foot-soldiers and mounts of many kinds with their riders were hacked apart, their arms and thighs and necks and feet cut off, their flags and bows and armour and ornaments broken.
38From that field, ground to powder under their feet and their chariot wheels, a fierce dust then rose, covering the quarters and the sky and the sun; and it settled again, for the field was flooded with running blood. 39That earth shone, strewn with heads whose crowns and earrings had been shaken loose, whose eyes were still furious and their lips bitten through, and with great arms in their ornaments still holding their weapons, and with tapering thighs. 40And trunks sprang up there, with the eyes of their own fallen heads, and ran at the fighting men in the field, their arms like clubs, their weapons still raised.
