Seeing his friend fallen, Jambha, Bali's comrade and well-wisher, came on, keeping faith with a friend even when the friend was struck down. Riding his lion, he came up, raised his mace and with great force struck Sakra at the collarbone, and the elephant as well; he was very strong. The elephant, hurt by that stroke of the mace and badly shaken, touched the earth with its knees and went into a deep faint. Then Matali brought up the chariot with its thousand horses, and the mighty one left the elephant and mounted the chariot. The best of the Danavas, honouring that piece of work of the driver's, struck him in the fight with a blazing spear, and smiled as he did it.

Matali took hold of his own courage and bore a pain very hard to bear; and Indra in his anger took off Jambha's head with the bolt.
