Hearing from the sage Narada that Jambha had been killed, his kinsmen, Namuci and Bala and Paka, hurried to that place. Crushing Indra with harsh words at the places where they hurt, they covered him with arrows, as clouds cover a mountain with their streams. Bala, quick of hand, wounded the thousand horses of the lord of bay horses in that fight with as many arrows, and all at once. Paka wounded Matali with two hundred, and the chariot with all its parts separately, in a single fitting and loosing; and that was a wonder in the battle. Namuci struck with fifteen great arrows feathered in gold, and roared in the fight like a raincloud full of water.

From every side the demons covered Sakra with his chariot and his driver under a heap of arrows, as rainclouds cover the sun in the wet season. Unable to make him out, the hosts of gods with their followers were beside themselves and cried out, leaderless, beaten by the enemy's strength, like traders at sea whose ship has broken up. Then the strong one came out of that cage built of arrows, with his horses and his chariot and his flag at their head, and shone, lighting the quarters and the sky and the earth with his own brightness, like the sun at the ending of night.
