That city of the gods the lord of the host shut in on every side from outside with his army, and he blew the great-voiced conch his teacher had given him, putting fear into Indra's women. The bountiful one, taking in this utmost effort of Bali's, went with all the companies of the gods to his teacher and said this to him. Revered one, this effort of Bali's, our enemy from before, is a great one. I think he is not to be withstood. From what has his fire been made so strong? No one anywhere is master enough to hold out against him. He seems to be drinking this world with his mouth, licking up the ten directions, burning the quarters with his eyes, risen like the fire at the world's end.

Tell me the cause of this hardness in my enemy, which nothing turns aside. Where do his vigour, his endurance, his strength, his fire and this effort of his come from?
