At the end of the age that has gone by there was Brahma's dissolution, the one that comes with its cause, and then, king, the worlds, the earth and the rest, were drowned in the sea. When with time sleep had come on the Ordainer and he wished to lie down, strong Hayagriva took away from close beside him the Vedas that had slipped out of his mouth. Knowing what Hayagriva, lord of the Danavas, had done, the Bhagavan Hari, the Lord, took on the shape of a small fish. There was at that time a great royal sage, Satyavrata by name, who had Narayana for his highest, and he did austerities, living on water alone. He it is who in this great age is the son of Vivasvat, known as Sraddhadeva, and set by Hari in the office of Manu.
