Verse 45

⁴⁵That knower of many verses lived with them, by the wealth of an austerity nobody could get to the end of, in houses whose furnishings were beyond price, with gardens of many kinds, pools of clear water, and groves of sweet-smelling flowers. ⁴⁶With costly beds and seats and clothes and ornaments, with baths and ointments and food and garlands, among well-dressed women and men, with brahmins and bees and bards singing along, he took his pleasure day after day. ⁴⁷Seeing that household of his, the lord of the seven-island earth was amazed, and let go of the stiffness that had come with his rule over the whole of it. ⁴⁸So, delighting in his houses and serving the things of sense with pleasures of every kind, he was not satisfied, any more than fire is with drops of ghee.
