20Saudasa, out hunting somewhere, killed a raksasa. He let the raksasa's brother go, and that one went off meaning to pay him back. 21Plotting harm against the king, he took the shape of a cook in the house, and when the teacher was ready to eat he cooked human flesh and brought it in. 22As it was being served the revered one saw straight off that it was food not to be eaten, and in anger he cursed the king: just so shall you become a raksasa. 23Learning then that a raksasa had done it, he made the curse twelve years long. And the king for his part took water in his cupped hands and stood ready to curse his teacher. 24Stopped by Madayanti, he let the burning water fall on his own feet instead. And the king saw the quarters of the sky, the sky itself, the earth, everything, as made of living things.
25He came into the nature of a raksasa, and a mottling appeared on his foot. He saw a brahmin and his wife, who made their home in the forest, at the time of their coupling.
