Sita, sent away by her husband, left the two boys with the sage and, holding Rama's feet in her mind, went down into a cleft in the earth. Hearing of it, the Bhagavan Rama held his grief back by thought; and yet, remembering this good in her and that, he could not hold it back, Lord though he is. The joining of woman and man is like this: it carries fear everywhere, even for lords. How much more for an ordinary man whose mind is on his house. From then on the mighty one held to chastity, and for thirteen thousand years he made the fire offering without a break. Rama set his own foot, soft as a new leaf and pierced by the thorns of the Dandaka, in the hearts of those who remember him, and then went to the light that is his own self.
