34He had three wives, king, daughters of Vidarbha, well thought of. When it was said that the boys did not take after him, they killed their sons, fearing they would be cast off. 35So his line came to nothing; and while he was sacrificing for the sake of a son, the Maruts, with the Marut chant, gave him Bharadvaja. 36Brhaspati went to his brother's wife when she was carrying a child, and was stopped; and he cursed what was in the womb and let his seed go. 37Mamata wanted to leave the child, fearing that her husband would cast her off; and the gods sang this verse, which gave the boy his name. 38Fool, bear this one born of two. Bear the one born of two, Brhaspati. Saying that, both the parents went away; and that is why he is Bharadvaja.
39Urged on by the gods in this way, and holding the son to be a false thing, she let him go. The Maruts kept him; and he was given into a line that had come to nothing.
