Hearing that pitiful speech of his, worn thin with long labour, he was burned through with pity, and he spoke these deathless words. I do not want the highest course from the Lord, nor the eight powers, nor an end to being born again. I take upon myself the pain of all who carry bodies, standing within them, so that they may be without sorrow. Hunger, thirst and exhaustion, the reeling of my limbs, wretchedness, weariness, grief, dejection, bewilderment: all of them have gone from me now, for I have given the water that is life to this poor creature who wants to live. Having said this, the king, steady and by his own nature full of pity, gave the water to the outcaste, though he was himself dying of thirst.
