There she saw the whole world: all that stands still and all that moves, the sky and the quarters, the ball of the earth with its hills and islands and seas, together with wind and fire and moon and stars, the wheel of the lights, water and light, air and space itself, the senses that come of change, the mind, the fine elements, and the three strands. Seeing this many-coloured thing, together with life and time and nature and works and the store of them and the differences of their signs, in her son's body, in his opened mouth, and the camp there too and herself with it, she came to a doubt. Is this a dream? Or is it the maya of a god? Or is it a bewildering of my own understanding? Or is it some power of the self belonging to this very child of mine, born along with him?

And since it is not, as it truly is, within the range of reasoning, nor of thought or mind or act or speech taken plainly: to that station, which this rests upon, and by which and from which it is known, so very hard to make out, I bow down. I, and mine, and this my husband, and this my son; and I the good woman who keeps all the wealth of the lord of the camp; and the cowherd women and the cowherds and the cattle are mine: he by whose maya my mind goes so wrong, he is my way.
