Brahmin, how could there be such love for Krsna, who was born of another, in those who had never had the like of it even for the children born to them? Tell me. For all beings, king, one's own self is what is dear, and the rest, children and wealth and the others, are dear only because that is dear. So, best of kings, the love that those who wear bodies have for their own selves is not the same as the love they have for children and wealth and house and the rest, on which a sense of mine is laid. And even for men who say that the body is the self, best of princes, the body is dearest, and what comes after it is not dear in the same way.

If even the body has a sense of mine laid on it, then it is not dear as the self is dear; for even when this body is wearing out, the wish to go on living is stronger. So one's own self is dearest to everything that wears a body, and it is for its sake alone that all this world is here, moving and unmoving.
