So into that forest, which had taken the most rain and was full of ripe dates and rose-apples, Hari went with Bala to play, the cows and the cowherds around him. The cows were walking slowly under the great weight of their udders, but when the Bhagavan called them they came quickly, their udders running with love. He saw the creatures of the forest glad, the ranks of trees dripping honey, the water coming down from the mountain, and the caves nearby, known by their sound. Sometimes when it was raining hard the Bhagavan went into the hollow of a great tree or into a cave, and there he was happy, eating roots and bulbs and fruit.

On a flat rock near the water he ate curds and rice that had been brought out, together with Sankarsana and with the cowherds who shared his food. The bulls settled on the green turf and chewing with their eyes shut, well fed, and the young calves, and the cows tired by the weight of their udders — seeing all this, and that beauty of the rains which brings gladness to every living being and which his own power had made greater, the Bhagavan did honour to it.
