Rama, Rama of great strength! Krsna, who puts down the wicked! This hunger is hard on us, and you two should do something about it. Told this by the cowherds, the Bhagavan, Devaki's son, meaning to show his favour to a brahmin's wife who was given over to him, said this. Go to the place of sacrifice. Brahmins who talk of Brahman are sitting there at a session called the Angirasa, out of a wish for heaven. Go there, cowherds, and ask them for cooked rice, saying that we sent you, and naming the Bhagavan my elder brother, and me. Told this by the Bhagavan, they went and asked as he had said, joining their hands and falling to the ground like sticks before the brahmins.

Gods on earth, listen. We do what Krsna says. Know that we cowherds have come here sent by Rama — good fortune to you. Rama and the Unfallen are grazing the cows not far from here and they want food, being hungry. You know dharma best, brahmins: if you have any faith in it, give food to those two, who are asking. Best of the good, apart from the consecration itself, the rite with the animal, and the Sautramani, even a man under consecration is not defiled by eating.
