What they saw in the grove· Verses 21–23

In a grove by the Yamuna, lovely with the fresh shoots of the asoka, the women saw him going about with the cowherds around him and his elder brother beside him: dark, with a gold cloth about him, dressed like an actor with forest garland and peacock feather and coloured earths and new shoots, one hand laid on a companion's shoulder, twirling a lotus with the other, a lily at his ear, curls on his cheeks, a smile on his lotus face. Their minds were sunk in him already through their ears, filled as with ornaments by all they had heard of the dearest one; now they brought him in through the openings of their eyes, held him inside a long while, and let their burning go, as notions do on reaching a wise man, king.
