Dressed for a festival in a wreath of jasmine, ringed by the cowherds and the wealth of the cows, at the Yamuna, Nanda's son, your child, sinless one, played and gave delight to those who love him. The soft wind blows favourably and honours him with the touch of sandal; and the companies of lesser gods, who are his bards, surrounded him with playing and singing and gifts. Tender to the cows of Vraja, he who held the mountain up, his feet honoured on the road by the old men, driving the whole wealth of cows home at the day's end, his flute sounding, his fame sung by those behind him — he comes, raising a festival for the eyes even by the look of his weariness, his garland powdered with the dust of hooves, wanting to give his friends what their hearts ask: this king of the stars born from Devaki's womb.
