Having let her go with sweet words, he went on along the road with his elder brother, and he was honoured by the merchants with all kinds of gifts, with betel and garlands and scents. At the sight of him longing shook the women so that they did not know themselves. Their clothes and their braids and their bracelets came loose, and they stood there like figures in a painting. Then the Unfallen asked the townspeople where the bow was kept. He went in there and saw a bow like Indra's, a wonder. It was guarded by many men and worshipped, and it was of the greatest richness. Though the men held him back, Krsna took the bow by force.

He lifted it in play with his left hand and strung it in the blink of an eye while they watched; then the wide-strider drew it and broke it in the middle, as a rutting elephant breaks a stalk of cane. The sound of the bow breaking filled the sky, and heaven and earth, and the quarters. Kamsa heard it and fear came over him.
