25Their two feet washed, they ate rice with milk poured over it, and passed that night in comfort, knowing what Kamsa meant to do. 26But Kamsa, hearing of the breaking of the bow, and of the killing of the guards and of his own troop, and of the whole of Govinda's and Rama's play, 27was afraid and lay long awake, and, dull-minded as he was, he saw many bad signs, in waking and in sleep alike, signs that go before death as its messengers: 28he could not see his own head, though the reflection was there; he saw the lights of the sky doubled, though there was no second one; 29he saw a hole in his shadow; he could not hear the sound of his own breath; the trees looked golden to him; and he did not see his own footprints.
30In dreams, an embrace by a ghost, a ride on a donkey, the drinking of poison; and one man going along garlanded with nard, smeared with oil, and naked. 31Seeing these and other such things, waking and dreaming, he was terrified of dying, and for thinking of it he could not sleep.
