Then, wanting to live in a teacher's house, the two of them went to a man of Kasi named Sandipani, who was living in the city of Avanti. Coming to him as one should, restrained, they took their place with him, and they honoured him with devotion as a god is honoured, making it plain how a blameless service of a teacher is taken up. That best of brahmins, their teacher, was pleased with the pure-hearted way they waited on him, and he spoke out to them all the Vedas with their limbs and their secret teachings, and the science of the bow with what is hidden in it, and dharma, and the paths of right reasoning, and the science of inquiry, and statecraft in its six kinds.

Those two, first among the best of men, who set every branch of knowledge going in the first place, took the whole of it in, king, at a single telling. In sixty-four days and nights, holding steadily to it, they had sixty-four arts; and then, king, they pressed the teacher to name what he wanted as his fee.
