There is no living together here for ever, king, at any time, with anyone, not even with one's own body, let alone with wife and children and the rest. A creature is born alone and it dissolves alone; alone it has the good it has done, and alone the harm. Others, poor in wit, carry off the wealth he has heaped up by wrongdoing, on the pretence that they are people he must feed, as water creatures carry off the waters. Those he feeds by wrongdoing, thinking them his own, his own breath, his riches, his sons and the rest, let him go, unlearned as he is, with nothing accomplished. Taking the guilt on himself, dropped by them, not knowing what wealth is for, with nothing accomplished, he turns his back on his own duty and enters the blind dark.

So look at this world, king, as a dream, a conjuring, a wish of the mind; hold yourself in with yourself; and be even-handed and at peace, lord.
