For one whose qualities have no end, who by his own play sets about the standing and the rising and the ending of the three worlds, the putting down of an enemy side is nothing to wonder at. Even so it is told, since he goes the way mortals go. Rama took hold of Jarasandha of great strength, his chariot gone, his life all that was left him when his army was killed, as a lion takes a lion by main force. As the killer of enemies was being tied with the ropes of Varuna and the ropes of men, Govinda stopped it, having something he wanted done through him. Let go by the two lords of the world, he was ashamed, honoured though he was among heroes, and set his mind on austerity; but on the road the kings turned him from it,

with words whose sense was cleansing, and with worldly reasoning too: This defeat of yours at the hands of the Yadus came to you by the binding of your own works. So, all his armies killed, the king of Brhadratha's line, whom the Bhagavan had passed over, went back to the Magadhas with a heavy mind.
