In this way seventeen times, with a force of that many armies, the king of Magadha made war on the Yadus, who were kept safe by Krsna. And the Vrsnis, by the splendour of Krsna, wore that whole force away; and each time, his armies killed, the king was let go by his enemies and went. As the eighteenth battle was coming on, in the time between, a hero appeared, a Yavana, sent by Narada. He came and shut Mathura in with thirty million barbarians. He had no match in the world of men, and he had heard that the Vrsnis were a match for him.
