There was a king named Bhismaka, a great man, lord of Vidarbha. He had five sons, and one daughter, of surpassing face. Rukmi was the eldest, then Rukmaratha, then Rukmabahu, then Rukmakesa, then Rukmamali; and Rukmini was their good sister. She heard of Mukunda's beauty and strength and qualities and splendour, sung by those who came to the house, and thought him a husband to match her. And Krsna set his mind on marrying her, a wife to match him, in whom understanding and good marks and generosity and beauty and character and good qualities all had their place. Her kinsmen wished to give the sister to Krsna, king; but Rukmi, who hated Krsna, blocked it, and had the Cedi king in mind.

Knowing that, the dark-eyed Vaidarbhi was very unhappy in her mind; she thought it over and quickly sent a trusted brahmin to Krsna.
