42This idea of yours toward all beings is a crooked one: that, like a man who does not know, you think always of harm for those who mean harm and of good for your own people. 43In men this bewilderment about the self takes shape by the maya of the god: friend, enemy, neutral, in those who take the body for the self. 44There is one supreme self and one only, of all who wear bodies. The deluded take it as many, as they take the light, as they take the sky. 45This body, which has a beginning and an end, made of the elements and the breaths and the strands, is laid on the self by not knowing, and carries the embodied one round from birth to birth.
46There is no joining of the self with another, and no parting: of the unreal with the real. Because it is the cause of that, and because it is known by that, as the sun is with seeing and with shape. 47Birth and the rest are changes of the body and never of the self, as the phases are not changes of the moon; its dying is like the moonless night. 48As a sleeping man goes through a self and objects and a reward as well, though the thing is not real, so the man who does not know comes by his round of becoming. 49So draw out by the knowledge of what is real this grief born of not knowing, which dries you up and bewilders you, and stand in yourself, clear-smiling one.
