Then out of the pit a fire rose up with a body, and it was terrible to look at: its crest and beard were heated copper, and its eyes threw out live coals. Its face was hard, with cruel tusks and a frown like a rod across it. Naked, it licked the corners of its mouth with its tongue and shook a blazing trident. With feet as long as palm trees it shook the floor of the earth, and ringed about with spirits it ran at Dvaraka, burning the directions as it came. Seeing that burning of the witchcraft coming on, all the people of Dvaraka were afraid, like deer in a forest fire. Sick with fear, they called out to the Bhagavan as he played at dice in his hall: Save us, save us, lord of the three worlds, from this fire that is burning the city.

Hearing the people's distress and seeing his own people's alarm, the giver of refuge laughed and said: Do not be afraid. I will protect you. The all-pervading one, who witnesses everything inside and out, knew the thing for the great Lord's making, and to undo it he ordered out the discus that stood at his side.
