18The Unfallen saw him from far off, and though he was sitting on his beloved's couch he stood up at once, went to him, and took him in both arms with delight. 19The lotus-eyed one, held close against the body of his dear friend the brahmin sage, was so glad and so at rest that drops of water fell from his eyes. 20Then he seated him on the couch, and himself brought out the things with which a friend is honoured, and washed his feet, and the water of that washing 21he took upon his head, king, the Bhagavan who makes the worlds clean. And he anointed him with sandal and aloe and saffron, sweet-smelling as heaven. 22He honoured his friend gladly with fragrant incense and rows of lamps, set betel and a cow before him, and spoke his welcome.
23The twice-born man was in poor clothes, dirty and wasted, with his veins standing out, and the goddess herself waited on him with the yak-tail fan.
