The jewel at the throat· Verses 39–41

39If those who strive do not pull up the tangled roots of desire in the heart, then you, hard for the bad to come at, though you have gone into the heart, are like the jewel at the throat that is forgotten. For yogins who only fatten their breath there is unhappiness on both sides, Bhagavan: from you, whose ending has not gone away and whose place has not been climbed. 40One who has come to know you does not reckon the good and the bad that rise from you, nor their having strands or wanting them, nor the words of those who bear bodies. Age after age and day after day, you who are full of qualities, men carry you in their ears by the handing down of song, since by them you are had as the way to release.
41The lords of heaven themselves have not reached your end, since you are endless, and neither have you, since within you the heaps of eggs with their coverings blow about like specks of dust in the sky, and time blows with them. For the Vedas bear fruit in you by casting out what is not you, and they have their ending in you.
