In the world, coupling, meat and drink come of themselves to a creature; there is no command that they be done. Marriage, sacrifice and the taking of liquor set bounds to them; but the turning back from them is what was wanted. Wealth has dharma for its one fruit, and out of dharma comes knowledge, with what is directly known, and after it a full stilling. But they use their wealth up in their houses, and do not see death standing over the body, whose strength there is no getting past. That the eating of liquor is prescribed by smell alone; that the laying of hands on the animal is not violence; that coupling in the same way is for children and not for pleasure: this cleansed form of their own duty they do not understand.

Those who do not know it so, who are bad and stiff and think themselves good, do harm to animals with an easy mind; and after death those animals eat them. Hating Hari the Lord, who is their own self, in the bodies of others, and tied by love to this dead thing and all that hangs on it, they fall down.
