41Fallen into the well of the round of birth, its eyes stolen by the things of sense, seized by the snake that is time: who else is master enough to save the self? 42The self alone is the guardian of the self, once it has turned away from everything. Watchful, it should see this world held in the mouth of the snake that is time. 43With her mind made up in this way, she cut off the poor hope born of her thirst for a lover, took up quiet, and sat down on her bed. 44Hope is the greatest sorrow and having no hope the greatest happiness. See how Pingala, having cut away her hope of a lover, slept happily.
