Having entered inside, fire takes on the qualities the wood gives it: going out and catching, being small or great, being of many kinds. Just so the higher one takes on the qualities of the body. This body, put together by the strands, belongs to the Person; it is his round of birth and it is what binds him. For a man who is the self, it is cut through by knowing. So by the wish to know let him come to the self, which stands in the self, alone and highest, and put away step by step the thought that this is a solid thing. The teacher is the lower firestick and the pupil the upper. The teaching is the rubbing of the two, and the joint they make, which is knowledge, brings happiness.

That skilled understanding, made wholly clean, shakes off the maya that the strands have brought forth; and having burned the strands, of which all this is made, it grows quiet of itself, like a fire with no fuel.
