Two birds in one tree· Verses 6–10

6Two fine-winged birds, alike and companions, have by chance made their nest in one tree. One of them eats the fruit of the fig; the other does not eat, and is the greater in strength. 7The one who does not eat the fig knows, and knows himself and the other too; the fig-eater does not. He who is joined to not knowing is always bound, and he who is made of knowing is always free. 8The man who knows stands in a body and does not stand in it, like one risen out of sleep; the man of wrong mind does not stand in a body and stands in it, like one seeing a dream. 9When the senses take hold of the things of sense, and the strands take hold of the strands, the man who knows makes no I out of it; he is not altered.
10Living in this body, which is under what is given, by works the strands bring about, the man who does not know is bound there by the thought: I am the doer.
