Mortals mostly know that the things of the senses are the seat of their troubles, and yet they eat them, Krsna. How does that happen, as with a dog, an ass or a goat? Bhagavan said: In the heart of a careless man the thought I rises up wrongly, and then dreadful passion moves up over the mind, which is born of the one of change. In a mind joined to passion there is willing, and it is full of alternatives; and out of that, by dwelling on the strands, comes desire, hard to bear, for the man whose mind is bad. In the grip of desire, his senses not mastered, bewildered by the rush of passion, he does works whose end is sorrow, and he sees it while he does them.

Even a man who knows, when his thought is scattered again by passion and darkness, does not cling, so long as he is not slack, but yokes the mind and keeps his eye on the fault. Watchful, let him go on yoking it, setting the mind on me little by little, not losing heart, taking his time, with breath mastered and seat mastered. This much is the yoga my pupils Sanaka and the others laid down: how the mind is drawn back from everywhere and set straight upon me.
