Even when he is pressed hard by the things of sense and his senses are not mastered, one devoted to me is mostly not overcome by them, for his devotion is bold. As a fire with its flames well fed turns the firewood to ashes, so does devotion that is set on me turn wrongs to ashes, Uddhava, every one of them. Uddhava, yoga does not bring me into a man's hands, nor enumeration, nor dharma, nor the study of his own text, nor austerity, nor giving up, as a strong devotion to me does. By devotion alone, and with trust, am I to be laid hold of, I who am the self and dear to the good. Devotion set on me makes clean even those who cook dogs, and takes the stain of their birth from them.

Dharma joined to truth and pity, or knowledge joined to austerity, does not fully make clean a self from which devotion to me is missing. How should the heart within be made clean without the hair standing up, without the mind melting, without a few tears of gladness, without devotion? One whose speech falters, whose mind melts, who cries again and again and sometimes laughs, who sings out without shame and dances: joined to devotion to me, he makes the world clean.
