If he means to rise to the world of the metres, to the high seat of Brahman, he should hand his body over to the teacher for the sake of the recitation, holding the great vow. In the fire, in the teacher, in himself and in all beings, he should serve me as the highest, thinking me not separate from them, shining with the light of Brahman and without stain. One who is not a householder should give up at the outset the looking at women, the touching, the talking, the sporting and the rest of it, and the sight of living creatures coupling. Cleanness, the sipping of water, bathing, worship at the joins of the day, straightness, going to the holy fords, the muttering of prayer, and keeping clear of what may not be touched or eaten or spoken with:

this is the rule set for every stage of life, joy of your line; and with it, holding me present in all beings, and keeping mind and speech and body in check. The brahmin who holds the great vow in this way blazes like fire. Devoted to me, the lodging of his works burnt out by keen austerity, he is spotless.
