With study of the Veda, with the calls to the fathers and to the gods, with offerings and food and the rest, according to his means, he should honour day by day the gods, the sages, the fathers and the beings: they are my forms. With wealth that comes to him of itself, or is earned in a clean way, without pressing hard on those who depend on him, he should carry out the rites in the way that is right. He should not be caught fast in his household, nor grow careless though he keeps one. Being wise, he should see even what is not seen as passing, just as what is seen. The coming together of sons and wife and friends and kin is a coming together of travellers on a road. They part again with each body, as a dream does when the sleep is over.

Thinking it through in this way and free, living in his house like a guest, he is not tied down by the house, having nothing of his own and no I-making. Worshipping me alone by the works that belong to a householder, full of devotion, he may stay where he is, or settle in the forest, or, if he has children, go out and wander.
