Sometimes the merit is the fault· Verses 16–18

Sometimes even a merit will be a fault, and a fault, by a rule, a merit. The very rule laid down about merit and fault cancels the division between them. For the fallen, doing what all of them do is no fall. Attachment is a merit that comes with birth. One who is already lying down does not fall further. From whatever a man turns back, from that he is set free. This is the dharma that keeps men safe, and it takes away grief and bewilderment and fear.
