Clinging, quarrel, anger, dark· Verses 19–22

19From laying merit upon the things of sense a man's clinging comes; out of clinging comes desire for them; and out of desire alone comes quarrelling among men. 20From quarrelling comes anger that is hard to bear, and darkness follows on anger. By darkness the awareness of a man, which spreads through the whole of him, is quickly swallowed. 21Bereft of that, good man, a creature is as good as empty. Then his own good is lost to him, as it is lost to one who has fainted, and to one who is dead. 22Sunk in the things of sense, he knows neither himself nor anything else. Living the life of a tree, he breathes to no purpose, like a bellows.
