Six, in this account too: the elements are five, and the sixth is the supreme Person. Joined with them, which had sprung from himself, he made this and entered it along with them. Four only, in this account too: fire, water and food are born of the self; from these this was born — the birth, surely, of the one that has parts. In the count of seventeen there are the elements, the subtle objects and the senses, five and five and five, with the mind for one; and the self is remembered as the seventeenth. So in the count of sixteen the self is spoken of as the mind itself. Elements and senses, five each, and the mind and the self: thirteen.

In the elevenfold count there is this self, and the great elements and the senses. And the natures are eight, and the Person makes the ninth. So the sages have made many countings of the principles. All of them are proper, since reasoning stands behind them. What in the learned is unbecoming?
