How those whose minds have turned from you, lord, by the works they themselves have done take on bodies high and low and let them go again: Tell me that, Govinda: it is hard for those who are not settled in themselves to make out. In the world, for the most part, there are no men learned in it; they are deceived. Bhagavan said: The mind of men, made of works and joined with the five senses, goes from world to world; the self, which is other, follows after it. The mind broods after the objects, those it has seen and those it has heard of, rising and sinking under the rule of works; and memory subsides after it. Because he is sunk in objects he does not remember the self again. For a living being, from whatever cause, death is a forgetting that goes all the way.

Birth, giver of much, they call the taking of an object to himself as himself, with his whole being — like a dream, like a wish carried on in the mind. Just so he does not remember the dream or the daydream he had before. There he looks on himself as if he were the one he was, and as one who had no before.
