1Bhagavan said: By which of the strands unmixed, and in what way, a man comes to be what he is: take this in from me, best of men, as I tell it. 2Calm, restraint, endurance, discernment, austerity, truth, kindness, memory, contentment, letting go, wanting nothing, trust, modesty, the rest that begins with kindness, and being at rest in oneself. 3Desire, striving, pride, thirst, stiffness, asking for blessings, dividing, pleasure, zeal born of pride, delight in fame, laughter, force, effort in strength. 4Anger, greed, lying, harming, begging, showing off, weariness, quarrelling, sorrow and delusion, low spirits and distress, sleep, hoping, fear, and doing nothing.
