Clarity, passion and darkness are the strands of the living being and never of me. They are born of the mind, and by them, as he clings to beings, he is bound. When clarity, shining and clear and kind, overcomes the other two, then a man is joined with happiness, with dharma and knowledge and the rest. When passion overcomes darkness and clarity, passion, which is clinging and dividing and unsteady, then he is joined with pain, with work, with fame and with wealth. When darkness overcomes passion and clarity, darkness, which is bewildered and dissolving and dull, he is joined with sorrow and delusion, with sleep, with harming and with hoping.

When the mind grows clear, and the senses are at rest, and there is no fear in the body and the mind clings to nothing, know that to be clarity, and my own ground. Changing under action, and unsteady; the thoughts never turning back; the limbs ill at ease; the mind wandering. Look for passion by these. The mind sinking and melting away, unable to take hold of a thought; the mind lost; darkness; exhaustion. Take that for darkness.
