Then, there, they drank a great drink, the sweet maireya, their thought thrown down by what was set for them; and it is by such liquids that thought is thrown down. Among those heroes, drunk with the great drink, their minds swollen, bewildered by Krsna's maya, a very great rivalry arose. Enraged, they fought on the shore with weapons raised: with bows, with swords, with barbed arrows, with maces, with lances and with spears. With their banners falling, on chariots and elephants and the rest, on donkeys, camels, oxen, buffaloes and on men too, and on mules, they came at one another, wild with drink, and struck with arrows, as elephants in a forest strike with their tusks.

Pradyumna and Samba, their spite risen high in the fight; Akrura and Bhoja; Aniruddha and Satyaki; Subhadra and Sangramajit, terrible; the two Gadas, and Sumitra and Suratha, came at one another. And the others, Nisatha and Ulmuka and the rest, Sahasrajit, Satajit, Bhanu and the chief among them, coming upon one another and blinded by drink, killed, being thoroughly bewildered by Mukunda. The Dasarhas, Vrsnis, Andhakas, Bhojas and Satvatas, the Madhus and the Arbudas, the Mathuras and Surasenas, the Visarjanas, the Kukuras and the Kuntis: then these threw away their friendship for one another. Sons fought with fathers and with brothers, with sisters' sons and daughters' sons, with uncles on the father's side and on the mother's; friends with friends and well-wishers with well-wishers; and kinsmen killed kinsmen, being bewildered.
