And Sumantu, who knew the Atharvan, taught his own gathering to his pupil; and he in his turn spoke it to Pathya and to Vedadarsa. Sauklayani, Brahmabali, Modosa and Pippalayani are the pupils of Vedadarsa. Now hear the pupils of Pathya: Kumuda, Sunaka, brahmin, and Jajali too, who knew the Atharvan. Babhru, a pupil of Angiras, and Saindhavayana as well, learned two gatherings; and so did the others, beginning with Savarna. Naksatrakalpa and Santi, Kasyapa and Angirasa and the rest: these are the teachers of the Atharvan. Now hear those of the Puranas, sage. Trayyaruni and Kasyapa, Savarni and Akrtavrana, Vaisampayana and Harita: these six are the men of the Puranas.

They learned a gathering each from the pupil of Vyasa, from my own father's mouth; and I, a pupil of these men, learned all of them. Kasyapa and I, and Savarni, and Akrtavrana the pupil of Rama, learned the four root gatherings from the pupil of Vyasa.
