Sometimes he was carried into a great whirlpool, sometimes beaten by the running waters, and somewhere he would be eaten by water creatures that were killing one another as well. Sometimes he came to grief, sometimes to delusion, sometimes to pain, to pleasure, to fear; and sometimes he came to death, harried besides by sickness and the rest. Hundreds and thousands of ten thousand times ten thousand years went by while he wandered there, his self covered over by Visnu's maya. Once, wandering there, that twice-born man saw a young banyan on a hump of the earth, lovely with its fruit and its new leaves. And on its north-eastern branch he saw a child, lying in the cup of a leaf, swallowing the darkness with its light.
