In plain words

The poet, to the Lord: Worldly people call the pleasures of the senses sweet; those who have given them up, my Lord, say that plain cool water is far sweeter. If, instead of desiring pleasures or water as sweet, they desired even a little of your greatness as their sweetness, it would keep them safe in every state.
