In plain words

Dēvakī, lamenting to Kaṇṇaṉ: "Tālō [lullaby], you who are like tall sugarcane ripe for the mill! Tālō, you whose eyes are wide as lotuses! Tālō, you who are hued like the water of the sea! Tālō, you who are like an elephant calf! Tālō, my son with long, fragrant locks!" To sing the lullaby to you like this, over and over, to my mouth's content, was a fortune I never had; among mothers who lack that fortune, I have become the lowest.
