In plain words

“The One of the Hall, the gracious-eyed, is loving to those who reach him”: what is this saying? You graciously delight in a cloak flayed from an elephant. You graciously watched as Kāma burned. Not knowing what great love is, strangers crowd round and speak slander. On one side the north wind tears at her life, and she has lost even her lovely dark glow. Seeing the plight of my girl, slender as a branch and in distress, you are unfair and do not grant the koṉṟai, and on top of that you graciously call us cruel!

Line by line

The One of the Hall, the gracious-eyed, to those who reach him indeed is loving: this saying, what is it? The elephant flaying, its cloak you graciously delight in; Madana burning you graciously saw; great love not knowing, strangers crowding, speaking slander; on one side the north wind tearing her life, her lovely dark glow too losing, my branch-like girl's distressed state seeing, without fairness the koṉṟai you do not grant; You are cruel, so you graciously call us, indeed.
