In plain words
Are there gains that will not come to one who toils? Are there miseries that will not come to one who shirks? Therefore, in the field of the heart the stump of deceit is dug out until its roots are gone, cleared away, and the ground is levelled. First the bed called love is marked out. The manure called truth is spread, and then the single seed of devotion, free of doubt, is sown. Every day the clear water of longing is let in. There are five strays that will not yield to those who hold them back, and they do harm. In fear of them one stands to face them, goes within and sets up the fence of calm. When it has come right, the great sprout of ñāṉam springs up and does not fail, and it shows the tender shoots of compassion. The weeds of lust and anger that spring up beside it are weeded out until they are gone. When it is kept safe, it rises tall in its rightness. The hair of the body buds into a thrill, tears gently bud, and the fragrant flower opens. Then the holy, rare fruit of the five letters appears. It has the dark throat filled with poison, and the eyes, all three, the shoulders, all four, the shining faces, all five. It takes on the colour of coral and is smeared with white ash. It has a taste beyond even the six tastes. Seen or heard or thought of, it gives joy. This sweet ruby fruit of Marutu, high as the sky, ripens slowly, slowly, and comes to hand, and people like us eat it with delight and stay exultant. Some do not come to this. They make the field called the mind a barren waste. The forest of lust covers it. The hunters who are the five senses do harm there and rob along the road. The mirage of pleasure runs out of reach, and the deer called untaught awareness wanders bewildered. When the seed of desire is dropped, the great poison tree whose name is I sprouts thick and strong. It puts out branches called falsehood and spreads the many leaves of sin that is committed. For flowers it buds with cruelty and blossoms with harshness. It hangs out many fruits of suffering. Afterwards it ripens into death and falls into hell. This world has people of such a nature indeed: helping neither themselves nor others, they pass away in the blink of an eye.
